Insights from CIMAC 2025: Preparing Cylinder Lubrication for the Green Transition

From 19–23 May 2025, HJ Lubricators participated in the CIMAC Congress in Zurich, one of the world’s most important gatherings for experts in large engine technology and propulsion systems. With over 200 technical presentations, the congress showcased the latest developments in alternative fuels, digitalisation, and net-zero strategies.

Representing our R&D department, Nikolaj Kristensen, Nick Thomsen, and Jesper Illum gained first-hand insights into trends that will shape the future of marine engine lubrication, especially as fuels like methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen continue to gain momentum.

Alternative Fuels Will Change Lubrication Requirements

The results validate not only the performance of HJ Lubricators’ common rail The shift towards greener fuels introduces new challenges for cylinder lubrication. Changes in combustion temperatures and acidity levels will likely require new oil formulations and system flexibility. This is highly relevant for HJ Lubricators’ systems, which must support evolving requirements for dosage control, injection timing, and compatibility with future materials.

One of the key messages from Shell’s Alexandra Ebbinghaus was the urgent need to act. She emphasised that waiting for a “perfect” green fuel is not a viable option the industry must accelerate the transition with the technologies and fuels already available.
