Enhancing marine engine performance with advanced CFD modelling

In a time where emissions regulations grow stricter and fuel efficiency becomes a strategic priority; HJ Lubricators continues to push the boundaries of what lubrication systems can achieve. A recent study conducted in collaboration with Aalborg University uses advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling to optimise the interaction between scavenging air and cylinder oil spray in two-stroke marine engines.

In two-stroke marine engines, scavenging air isn’t just for clearing combustion gases—it plays a crucial role in oil distribution. The swirling air helps to disperse lubricant evenly across the cylinder liner. But achieving this balance is complex, especially under varying load conditions. Poor scavenging leads to localised wear, excess oil consumption, and higher emissions.

By modelling these dynamics in detail, engineers gain new insights into how engine performance and sustainability can be improved simultaneously.

The role of turbulence models

The study compared two widely used turbulence models:

  • k–ε, known for predicting spray distribution and tangential velocity with high accuracy
  • k–ω, often used in high-shear flow regions

While both models performed well in pressure predictions, k–ε consistently delivered more accurate results in terms of spray distribution and oil film formation—especially in areas prone to cylinder liner wear.

Key findings

  • Improved oil distribution: The k–ε model showed a broader, more consistent spray pattern, particularly in high-wear regions.
  • Better scavenging dynamics: Swirl and flow predictions aligned more closely with experimental data when using the k–ε model.
  • Enhanced SIP performance: Simulations confirmed that HJ Lubricators’ Swirl Injection Principle (SIP) benefits from turbulence-aware modelling.

A smarter way to model and manage lubrication

Advanced CFD modelling—especially with the right turbulence model – opens new opportunities for smarter engine design and operation. With k–ε delivering superior results in both flow and spray predictions, HJ Lubricators can help the maritime industry take a confident step forward in intelligent lubrication.

By applying these insights, shipowners can:

  • Reduce cylinder oil consumption and operating costs
  • Lower emissions to meet IMO targets
  • Prolong engine life and reduce maintenance intervals
